ANZAC DAY ACTIVITIES WITH KIDS | BUILDING MEMORIES

ANZAC Day stands as one of the most solemn days on the public holiday calendar and yet at the same time brings with it the overwhelming feeling of Australian patriotism. ANZAC day is a day that can not be ignored and is often heavily featured within the school curriculum as well with ceremony as part of the school week prior to the actual day.
This is a day about the people, the soldiers, the families and those who have fought and continue to fight for some sense of world order and for the safety of others. It is about a tragic day and tragic days that followed and so much more. It is about those that have lost their lives in the name of protecting our freedom. It is any wonder with such a complex subject that we wonder how best to involve children. How much is too much?
  • Talk about it Talking about ANZAC day is important because its going to be discussed in school and it’s going to feature heavily in the media and in shopping centres with donation tables. Talk to your child’s teacher and find out what they will be talking about so you can find out how to extend that learning and form support around them. In my child’s kindy (he is 3) they are painting with rosemary. There wont be much discussion around the reality of life lost but rather the aspect of protecting our freedom, being safe, protecting our country etc. Make your discussion age appropriate. Have a read through our Tips for Explainign ANZAC Day to Toddlers.
  • Go to a march There are many in Brisbane (not all dawn services) check our Where are the ANZAC Services and Marches in Brisbane? guide or the Brisbane Calendar. Let them experience the pride of the march, the emotion of the last post and the symbolism of poppies, uniforms and the Australian flag.
  • Do some Anzac craft. some simple painting of poppies is a lovely way to extend on learning. (NOTE Even though the poppy is traditionally associated with remembrance day on Nov 11th it is now a symbol that is being used on other days like ANZAC as a symbol of sacrifice and remembrance   The gesture is linked to the red poppies that were the first plants to bloom in the post war battlefields of World War 1 in France and Belgium. It was believed in soldier folklore that the red was the blood of the soldiers who lost their lives (source: The Australian War Memorial)).
  • Bake some ANZAC treats.. We have a chewy ANZAC slice on our website and even delicious ANZAC pikelets but there are tons of recipes all over the internet for these yummy and healthy treats.
anzac slice
  • Bake some damper.. a great way to demonstrate to kids how bread might have been baked during war times, both at home and afield. Its a token activity but simple activities work best in conveying information and concepts to children.
  • Buy a badge or other commemorative symbol.. The symbolism will be lost on most kids but it is a gesture that in my words to my children “Shows support to our soldiers”.
  • Read some Anzac Books.  We found a great list here on the Kid Size living Website
  • Plant a Rosemary bush read about the symbolism here. You can buy Rosemary at most local
  • Spend some time together as a family Enjoy this country. The real reason that the ANZAC day means so much is because of the freedom it afforded.. so enjoy that time with your kids and family. Get into the great outdoors, pack a picnic, go to the beach, spend some time together.

Why Darkness to Daylight?

When women, men and children face the silent epidemic that is domestic violence, they feel alone and face extreme solitude, pain and hardships. The 100km run epitomises the challenge that is domestic violence and a runner at the front will hold a candle symbolising the hope that the victims will feel, which is often so out of reach. Services are available to victims and perpetrators in order to help us achieve a vision of a world where families are a safe and loving environment for every one of us. The runners taking up the challenge of the last 10km will represent our community and services that are there to speak out and help those faced with this epidemic. But they need everyone of us to take on the challenge of speaking out about domestic violence so that it comes out from the closed doors of our homes.

Why Challenge Yourself?

The combined 110km run epitomises the challenge that is domestic violence. Each 1km will represent a person who lost their life in the previous year to domestic violence. We ask you to join the challenge and commit to speaking out about domestic violence.

How can you get involved?

1. Run the whole 110km as a whole or relay the distance with a team in 3, 7 or 10km legs;
2. Run the last 10kms together with the overnight runners, as a team or individually;
3. Walk the last 3kms, as a team or individually.

The only 'rule' is that the candle will always be moving and will always 'light the way' with the front-runner.

Schedule Overview

Wednesday 6 May 2015
17.30 Southbank Cultural Forecourt, Candle Lighting Vigil
18.30 Southbank Cultural Forecourt, Runners leave the Candle Lighting Vigil to start the 110km Darkness to Daylight Challenge

Thursday 7 May 2015
05.30 Southbank Cultural Forecourt, Final 10km Morning 'Together' Run Challenge Starts
06.00 Southbank Cultural Forecourt, Last 3km Walk Starts
07.00 Southbank Cultural Forecourt, Free Breakfast
08.00 Southbank Cultural Forecourt, Darkness to Daylight Challenge Concludes

The Challenge = 110km on 6th & 7th May 2015.

Every year in Australia approximately 110 women, children and men die because of domestic and family violence. Australia's CEO Challenge, with the support of law firm Minter Ellison, are shining a light once again on this silent epidemic.
Last year 280 runners and walkers carried the message that domestic violence is not okay and raised $20,000 for Australia's CEO Challenge so that we could help:
- Train over 1,000 people to Recognise, Respond and Refer.
- 945 women and 1,275 children fleeing from violent homes.
- Implement 14 workplaces with policies to keep staff employed when affected by domestic violence.
- 46,000 employees by violence proofing their workplace.
This year we ask you to sign up to challenge yourself, your friends, your colleagues, your dog and your neighbours for all or part of the challenge through darkness in to daylight.
Together we can make a difference and speak out - every step counts towards our shared vision of a world safe from violence.
