Strengthening Neighbourhood Watch Groups and increasing Police Liaison Officer numbers in Logan were among topics discussed when the Logan: City of Choice Leadership Team invited local community safety leaders to its meeting on 1 May 2015.

The round-table discussion was the second in a new series of meetings between the Leadership Team and community leaders from a range of sectors in Logan City.

Represented at the meeting were Neighbourhood Watch Groups Logan Central 5, Woodlands, Marsden and Kingston. Logan-Beaudesert Crime Stoppers also attended, along with a representative from the Queensland Police Service (QPS) Logan District.

Guests were invited to speak about emerging issues within the community safety sector, and a recurring theme for Neighbourhood Watch Groups was the challenge of attracting new members, especially those from younger generations.

The Leadership Team agreed that more support and resources were necessary for these groups to help them better connect with their communities of interest. The need to strengthen Neighbourhood Watch Groups will be incorporated into the new Safety Plan currently being developed by Logan City Council.

Also during the meeting, the QPS representative confirmed that a new Police Liaison Officer had been appointed to the Logan Police District. The new officer is of Samoan heritage. Logan Police are looking to also appoint an Islamic Police Liaison Officer.

Logan: City of Choice Safety Portfolio Leader, Councillor Russell Lutton, said the meeting provided an opportunity for community safety leaders to receive an update on the safety initiatives being delivered through the City of Choice Two-Year Action Plan.

"It was also invaluable for the Leadership Team to speak directly with some of the tireless volunteers working to help keep our community safe, and to also hear directly from the Queensland Police Service," Cr Lutton said.
